We accomplish this through our SONC training. Safety, Operation, Navigation, Condition

All boat owners and marinas renting a boat are required to perform a relatively short training course to familiarize the renter with operation of the boat, the hazards of the navigational area, the use and location of the emergency equipment, and of course the condition of the vessel. Depending on the type of vessel and the body of water, this could take anywhere from 10-30 minutes.

Experienced boaters are not exempt. Why? Every body of water has unique hazards. Boaters from freshwater are not familiar with the unique hazards and that falling and rising tides can cause. Mooring a boat along a dock, on a lift, on a shallow beach, or in a slip all have different risks to people and the vessel. The vessel itself may have unique configurations, such as the battery switches, need for oil, fuel requirements, GPS systems, optimal motor trimming and rpm's, etc.

For a small commitment of time, the renter can have piece of mind that he is familiar with the vessel and the area, and the boat owner knows that the renter wont make dangerous mistakes to person and property that comes from inexperience.
